The good news is that focus can be rebuilt at home, and screen-driven distraction is not the same as ADHD, though the two can look alike.
How Screens Affect Children's Attention
The human brain is not designed for the pace of modern digital content. Algorithmically curated feeds, short-form video, and games with rapid reward cycles all deliver stimulation at a rate that the brain quickly adapts to, and begins to expect.
When a child spends significant time in high-stimulation digital environments, the dopaminergic reward system recalibrates. Slower-paced activities, reading, conversation, open-ended play, sustained homework, feel unrewarding by comparison. Not because the child is lazy or unmotivated, but because the brain has been conditioned to expect a faster rate of input and reward.
This is the mechanism behind many parents' observations: "he was fine before he got the phone," "she used to love reading," "he can't sit still anymore." These changes are real, measurable, and, importantly, reversible.
The research: A landmark study following 8,324 children (ABCD dataset) found social media use, not gaming or TV, associated with a cumulative increase in inattention symptoms over 4 years. Content type and pace matters, not just screen time hours.
Is It ADHD or Is It Screens?
This is one of the most common questions parents bring to us, and to schools, GPs, and specialists. The honest answer is: sometimes it's both, and distinguishing between them matters.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition with a strong genetic component. It exists independently of technology. But screen use can produce attention and behavioural symptoms that closely resemble ADHD, including inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and difficulty with task completion, in children who do not have the condition.
The distinguishing question is: do these difficulties exist across all contexts, or primarily in contexts that follow screen time or require sustained, low-stimulation engagement? If a child struggles to sit through a lesson but can focus for two hours on a game, the issue may be less about attention capacity and more about the gap between what the brain has been conditioned to expect and what the offline world delivers.
If you're concerned about ADHD, a GP or educational psychologist assessment is the right route. But in parallel, building attention skills through reduced stimulation and intentional offline practice is valuable regardless of the underlying cause.
The Attention Span Your Child Is Born With, and the One They Build
Attention is not a fixed trait. It's a skill, and like all skills, it can be built or eroded depending on how it's exercised.
Sustained attention, the ability to stay with a task, resist distraction, and tolerate the low-stimulation periods between reward, is built through practice. Reading. Open-ended play. Creative projects. Conversation. Being bored. These are not inefficient uses of time. They're the environments in which attention grows.
Passive consumption of algorithmically selected content exercises almost none of these capacities. The content does the work. The brain receives, but doesn't reach.
What rebuilding attention looks like at home
- Protect boredom, a child who can tolerate being unstimulated is building the most important attention skill there is
- Screen-free reading time daily, even 15 minutes, consistently, builds different neural pathways than passive viewing
- One thing at a time, multitasking (screens + homework) trains divided attention; single-tasking builds sustained focus
- Work in time blocks, short, focused periods with defined endpoints are easier to sustain than open-ended tasks

Focus, School, and the Long-Term Stakes
Attention is the foundation of learning. A child who cannot sustain focus long enough to read a paragraph, follow a lesson, or work through a problem is in a significantly different position from one who can, regardless of intelligence, motivation, or support.
The UK government's 2026 school smartphone guidance, alongside the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act, reflects growing recognition that devices in schools are affecting learning outcomes. But the solution doesn't start or end at the school gate. The habits children build at home shape the brain they bring to school.
